the rainbow
Genesis 9:12-15
And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:
I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.
And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud:
And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.
The promise of the gospel is prefigured by the covenant of God, that he will not destroy the world, which is represented by rainbow. Formation of a rainbow requires cloud, rain, and sun, all of which are symbols associated with the gospel.
the brass heaven
Deuteronomy 28:23
And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron.
A figure of drought.
true doctrine is like rain
Deuteronomy 32:2
My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:
As the dew or rain distils from the atmosphere, wisdom is given by God through his Spirit.
words are like rain
Job 24:21-23
Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel.
After my words they spake not again; and my speech dropped upon them.
And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.
Job gave wisdom and men listened.
God's strength is in the clouds
Psalm 68:34
Ascribe ye strength unto God: his excellency is over Israel, and his strength is in the clouds.
Perhaps God's strength is in the saints, who are represented by clouds bringing spiritual rain.
clouds are his chariot
Psalm 104:3
Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind:
The clouds are his chariot. This fits the idea that the saints are represented by chariots.
rain clouds are welcome
Proverbs 16:15
In the light of the king's countenance is life; and his favour is as a cloud of the latter rain.
The king's favour is like the blessing of rain in season.
cloud symbol defined
Proverbs 25:14
Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.
While clouds without rain represent those who falsely boast of possessing a gift, of wisdom or knowledge, clouds that bring rain are those who possess genuine gifts from God.
a pillar of cloud and smoke Isaiah 4:5
And the LORD will create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defence.
Alludes to the pillar of cloud which attended the Israelites as they came aout of Egypt.
Satan exults himself
Isaiah 14:14
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
Satan seeks to ascend above the clouds. The clouds refer to the saints.
hail sweeps away lies
Isaiah 28:17
Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
Hail evidently represents strong correction.
rain is the word
Isaiah 55:9-11
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
When the rain waters the ground it produces crops that man harvests for food and nourishment, and for bread; the word of God is spiritual food or nourishment.
clouds represent people
Isaiah 60:8
Who are these that fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows?
The saints "fly as a cloud," and they are "harmless as doves."
a dry wind, clouds, and a whirlwind Jeremiah 4:11-14
At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A dry wind of the high places in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to fan, nor to cleanse,
Even a full wind from those places shall come unto me: now also will I give sentence against them.
Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as a whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe unto us! for we are spoiled.
O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee?
A hot wind from the desert--"It is not a chastisement to purify the people, but a judgment which will sweep away the whole people, carry away both wheat and chaff - a most effective figure for the approaching catastrophe of the destruction of Jerusalem, and the carrying away captive of its inhabitants." [Keil and Delitzsch]
a cloudy day
Ezekiel 30:3
For the day is near, even the day of the LORD is near, a cloudy day; it shall be the time of the heathen.
The day of the Lord is "the time of the heathen." It is a "cloudy day," and the clouds are dark.
clouds that cover the land
Ezekiel 38:16
And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.
The prophet refers either to fog, or to low clouds, that are viewed from above, as if from a high hill or a mountain. Viewed from a mountain, low clouds may cover the land around about and hide it from view.
the Son of man comes with the clouds Daniel 7:13
I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.
The Ancient of days refers to Christ; the saints, who are represented by the clouds, are brought before Christ.
clouds and darkness on the day of the Lord Joel 2:2
A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.
Christians are associated with the clouds of the day of the Lord. They are a great multitude. There are clouds that bring rain, and others that do not.
the former rain, and the latter rain Joel 2:23
Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.
Rain is promised. The rain is symbolic of the word of God and of the Spirit.
God comes as rain Hosea 6:3
Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.
God promises to come to his saints, as the rain comes in its season.
God will rain righteousness Hosea 10:12
Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.
It is time to seek God; his righteousness comes like rain.
bright clouds
Zechariah 10:1
Ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain; so the LORD shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field.
Bright clouds that bring rain are saints that teach the truth of the gospel.
rain is spiritual Zechariah 14:17-18
And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain.
And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the LORD will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.
Most of Egypt depends on the floods of the Nile for water, not upon rain. Thus the rain referred to is not literal rain.
Jesus coming in the clouds Matthew 24:30
And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Jesus is evident in his saints, who are represented by clouds.
three years and six months of famine Luke 4:24-26
And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.
But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;
But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.
The three years and six months when there was no rain in the time of Elijah was typical of the whole age of the church in which no new revelation has been given, and when miracles seem to have ceased.
a cloud like a man's hand
1 Kings 18:43-45
And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.
And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down that the rain stop thee not.
And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.
The cloud that Elijah's servant saw is one of the most famous in the Bible.
winds of doctrine
Ephesians 4:14
That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
Clouds are carried by wind, and wind represents doctrine.
a cloud of witnesses
Hebrews 12:1
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
The heroes of faith mentioned in the previous chapter are the great "cloud of witnesses."
clouds that are carried with a tempest 2 Peter 2:17
These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.
False teachers are "clouds that are carried with a tempest."
the fruit of the earth
James 5:7
Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.
God is patiently waiting for the fruit of the earth to spring forth, and the time of the "latter rain."
Jesus is revealed coming with clouds Revelation 1:7
Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
This prophecy indicates all men will eventually come to repentance.
a rainbow around the throne Revelation 4:3
And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.
The rainbow is associated with Christ, and the gospel.
An angel clothed with a cloud
Revelation 10:1
And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:
The angel in this chapter is thought to represent Christ. He is clothed with a cloud; the woman in heaven in Revelation 12:1 is clothed with the sun.
Heaven is shut
Revelation 11:6
These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.
The heaven being shut, and lack of rain, pictures the lack of understanding of prophecy during most of the church age, as well as the absence of other spiritual gifts.

a white cloud
Revelation 14:14
And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle.
Christ sits on a white cloud, which corresponds to the white linen of the bride, [Revelation 19:8] and his white horse, and the horses of the armies in heaven who follow him. [Revelation 19:14]
a great hail
Revelation 16:21
And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.
